It is generally recommended to plan your maternity photography session in the late second or early third trimester. You want to be clearly showing but still feel comfortable enough to enjoy the process.
Earlier than that and the belly may not be prominent enough, later than that and you may feel uncomfortable. You want to be clearly showing but still feel comfortable enough to enjoy the process. Be sure to plan things early so you'll be sure to have your choice of a convenient time. Every woman and every pregnancy is different, so listening to your body is always a good idea. The session itself can take place outdoors at a location of your choosing or in my studio. Outdoor sessions can be a bit more candid and casual looking, whereas studio portraits have a classic posed look. Outfit changes are welcomed and encouraged; feel free to bring along casual and/or formal attire. Shirts that are more form fitting to show off the belly work best! What to wear: A dress is comfortable and always a good look. Something that flows but still form fitting to compliment that beautiful growing belly. If you would like to show off that bear belly in a casual way bring along a pair of jeans that do not have a large belly band, these tend to leave marks on your skin. A buttoned up shirt works well with this look; if you don't have one borrow your husbands! Please wear something that is comfortable, easy to move in, and will highlight your belly if you wrap your hands around it. Solid colors work well, but if you choose to wear a pattern, larger scale tends to work better (i.e., wide stripes, large floral, etc.) to flatter your growing baby bump. If you would like to include family members in your portrait session, have everyone wear the same color or hue and stay at the same level of dressiness. You don't have to be super matchy, just colors that complement one another. You may need to sit or lie down for some poses (on benches, tree stumps, rocks, or even the ground); please wear clothing that would make this easier. Maxi dresses are great for creating a more regal, sophisticated look and are also really great for modesty. Separates work best for “bare belly” shots. All black can sometimes make the belly “disappear” in photos. |
